100 yds. super-chunky wool-blend yarn (sample shown in Wool-Ease Thick & Quick)

in main color (MC)

20 yds. super-chunky wool-blend yarn in contrast color (CC) – for optional tassel & trim

Size N/15 (10 mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 2 sts = 1” in double crochet on size N hook

Pattern notes: Hat is worked from side to side in double crochet rib which is joined into a circular band. Stitches are worked in rounds for top crown decreases.

Hat

Lower rib portion:

Row 1: With MC, ch 14, dc in 4th ch from hk, dc in ea ch across, turn (12 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3, working in back loop only (BLO), dc in ea dc across, ending dc in 3rd ch of beg ch from previous row, turn (12 dc)

Rows 3-18: Rep Row 2 (12 dc)

Row 19 (joining row): Holding foundation ch edge together with last row worked, sl st across through both thicknesses. Turn piece right side out so sl st seam is on inside of tube.

Crown portion:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 2 sc in end of ea row of ribbed section, join with sl st, do not turn (36 sc)

Rnd 2 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next 3 sc, sc next 2 sc tog, *sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (30 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st, do not turn (30 sc)

Rnd 4 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, *sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (24 sc)

Rnd 5 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next sc, sc2tog, *sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (18 sc)

Rnd 6 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc2tog, *sc in next sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (12 sc)

Rnd 7 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc2tog around, join with sl st (6 sc). Cut yarn, leaving 6” tail, gather sts tog to close top of hat. Weave in tails.

Finishing:

Tassel:

Wrap CC around 6” measure 10 times. With separate 16” length of yarn, tie strands together at one end. Cut strands at other end. With a 24” length of yarn, wrap strands 1” down from tied end, tie securely and thread tails down into head of tassel. Trim ends of tassel evenly. Attach tassel to top center of hat and fasten securely.

Trim:

With a 24” length of CC, whipstitch all around lower edge of hat rib as shown in photo. Weave in tails.
