Materials needed:
worsted weight yarn in red and white (I used cotton)
Crochet hook size H (5mm)
Fits average adult head. For slightly smaller or larger sizes, change hook size.
Always start dc rounds with ch3, counts as first dc.
Always start sc rounds with ch1, does NOT count as first sc.
When changing colours, work last st of first colour till 2 loops remain on hook. Pull through next colour to finish st.
With red: Ch4, join to form ring.
Rnd 1: 2dc in each st around. (20)
Rnd 2: (2dc in 1 st, dc in next) around. (30)
Rnd 3: (2dc in 1 st, dc in next 2) around. (40)
Rnd 4: (2dc in 1 st, dc in next 3) around. (50)
Rnd 5: (2dc in 1 st, dc in next 4) around. (60)
Rnd 6: (sc in 5 sts, 2sc in next) around. (70) FO red.
Rnd 7: Join white. Sc around.
Rnd 8: Sc around.
Rnd 9: Sc in 2 sts, changing to red. Work: 1sc in red, 23sc white, 1sc in red, 22 sc in white, 1sc in red, 20sc in white. Join.
Rnd 10: 1sc white, 3sc red, 21 sc white, 3sc red, 20sc white, 3sc red, join.
Rnd 11: 1sc white, 3 red, 1sc white, 1sc red, 17sc white, 1sc red, 1sc white, 3sc red, 1sc white, 1sc red, 16sc white, 1 red, 1 shite, 3 red, 1 white, 1 red, 16 white, 1 red, join.
Rnd 12: 6sc red, 17 white, 7 red, 16 white, 7 red, 16 white, 1 red, join.
Rnd 13: Repeat round 12.
Rnd 14: Sl st into next st. 3sc in red, 21 white, 3red, 20 white, 3red, 20 white.
Rnd 15: 4 red, 19 white, 5 red, 18 white, 5 red, 18 white, 1 red, join.
Rnd 16: Sl st into next st. 1 red, 23 white, 1 red, 22 white, 1 red, 22 white--do NOT change to red. Join. FO all reds. Weave in ends.
Rnd 17&18: Sc evenly around in white. FO.
Rnd 19: Join red. Sc around.
Rnd 20: * 5dc in first st. Sk 2 sts, sc in next. Ch2, sc in next st. Sk 2 sts. Repeat from * around. FO.
For a more masculine trim: Rnds 20 & 21, sc around. Round 22: Reverse sc around (or use regular sc).
