Hook size 3.5 and 6

Yarn needle

Measuring tape for gauge if desired

Dark Red medium worsted weight yarn

Black medium worsted weight yarn

White Bulky yarn

Yellow medium worsted weight yarn

1 Red pipe cleaner

Techniques:

This hat is completed using both rounds and rows with single crochet and half double crochet stitches.

Abbreviations:

Rd = round

ch = chain

hk = hook

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

st = stitch

sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together to form 1 sc

Hat: working in continuous rounds with 3.5 hook

Rd 1: In red, ch 3, 8 hdc in 2nd ch from hk (8)

Rd 2: 2 hdc in each st around (16)

Rd 3: ( 2hdc, 1 hdc) repeat around (24)

Rd 4: (2hdc, 1 hdc in 2 st) repeat around (32)

Rd 5: (2hdc, 1 hdc in 3 st) repeat around (40)

Rd 6: (2hdc, 1 hdc in 4 st) repeat around (48)

Rd 7: (2hdc, 1 hdc in 5 st) repeat around (56)

Rd 8: (2hdc, 1 hdc in 6 st) repeat around (64)

Rd 9-17: hdc around (64)

Rd 18: In back bump only – hdc around (64) NOTE – this round is important as you will be working in the 2 loops that are visible. sl st and fasten off

Brim: working in rows you will form a half circle

Row 1: In red, ch 2, 4sc in 2nd ch from hk. ch 1, turn

Row 2: (switch to hdc): 2hdc in each st (8), ch 1, turn

Row 3: (2 hdc, 1 hdc) across (12), ch 1, turn

Row 4: (2hdc, 1hdc in 2 st) across (16), ch 1, turn

Row 5: (2hdc, 1hdc in 4 st) across (20) ch 1, turn

Row 6: bend pipe cleaner and crochet into this row – this will help keep the shape of your brim. Bend either end of the pipe cleaner down along the flat side of the half circle: (2hdc 1hdc in 5 st) across (24)

Edging Round: – do not turn – continue to crochet along flat side, crocheting the pipe cleaner ends into your work – Sc 21. slip st and fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing. Sew your brim to the 2 loops that are visible from round 18 of the hat.

Hat edging round: reattach red with a sl st to the brim. sc along the brim and around the entire hat, along the 2 visible loops of round 18. You will have approx 73sc. sl st and fasten off. sew in your end.

Hat ridges: Make 5

In red: ch 26, fasten off leaving a long end for sewing. Line your 5 chain 26s to the top center of the hat and sew down the hat. 2 should be placed on either side of brim, 1 between them, and the last 2 framing the front of the hat. Sew in all the ends.

Front decal in yellow:

I added the initials of the hat’s recipient. Feel free to do the same or embroider Fire Chief or a number.

Round 1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk (6)

Rd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Rd 3: (1 sc, 2sc) around (18)

Rd 4: (1 sc in 2, 2sc) around (24)

Rd 5: (1 sc in 3, 2sc) around (30)

Rd 6: (1 sc in 4, 2sc) around (36) – attach black and fasten off yellow

Rd 7: in black sc around (36) – do not fasten off – use the black to ch or embroider your words/initials, leaving a long enough end to also sew onto your hat. When done, sew to the front and weave in your end

Earflaps (firefighter hat straps) in black: Make 2

Row 1: Attach black with a sl st to sc eding round of hat, approx 4 stitches from brim. Sc 10, ch and turn.

Row 2-3: sc across, ch 1, turn (10)

Row 4: sc2tog, sc in 6, sc2tog (8) ch 1, turn

Row 5: sc across (8) ch 1, turn

Row 5: sc2tog, sc in 4, sc2tog (6) ch 1, turn

Row 5: sc across (6) ch 1, turn

Row 6: sc2tog, sc in 2, sc2tog (4) ch 1, turn

Row 7: sc across (4) ch 1, turn

Row 8: (sc2tog)2x (2), ch 1 turn

Row 9-24: sc across, ch 1 turn (2). Do not turn at end of Row 24 – continue to sc along the edges down to the hat. sl st, fasten off and weave in end. Reattach on the other side of earflap and continue to sc along side back to the top. You will have approx 26 sc on either side. sl st and fasten off, weaving in end.
