Notes:

Right and left-handed mittens are the same. The decorative cuff is optional and worked in turned rounds/joined rows, while the rest of the mitten is worked in the usual manner.

Special Stitch:

WTr (Woven Treble): Yo twice, insert hook in front of ch sp in row below and behind ch sp in second row below, and then insert hook in st in third row below, pull this stitch forward so that no ch sps obstruct it, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through two loops] three times. Do not enclose any ch sps in this st.

Woven Warmth Mittens Instructions:

Make the Cuff:

Row 1: With Color A, ch 8, skip the ch closest to the hook, blo sc in each rem ch across; turn. (7 sc)

Rows 2 — 22: Ch 1, blo sc in each st across; turn.

Holding Row 1 and Row 22 together, join ends with sl st to form cuff. Do not break yarn.

Lower Hand:

Rnd 1: Loosely sl st evenly around cuff for 22 sts, join.(22 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, [sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice; join.(24 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice; join. (26 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice; join.(28 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, [sc in next 13 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice; join.(30 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, [sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice; join.(32 sts)

Rnds 7 and 8: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join.

Create Thumb Opening:

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in first 27 sts, ch 5, skip remaining sts; join.(27 sc)

Continue with Upper Hand:

Rnds 10 — 18: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join. (32 sc)

Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each rem st around; join. (31 sc)

Rnd 20: Ch 1, sc in the first 29 sts, sc2tog; join. (30 sc)

Rnd 21: Ch 1, [sc 13, sc2tog] twice; join. (28 sts)

Rnd 22: Ch 1, [sc 12, sc2tog] twice; join. (26 sts)

Rnd 23: Ch 1, [sc 11, sc2tog] twice; join. (24 sts)

Rnd 24: Ch 1, [sc 10, sc2tog] twice; join. (22 sts)

Rnd 25: Ch 1, sc in each st around.

Rnd 26: Ch 1, [sc 9, sc2tog] twice; join. (20 sts)

Rnd 27 and 28: Ch 1, sc2tog around; join. After Rnd 28 break yarn and use tail to cinch top of mitten closed. (5 sts)

Make the Thumb:

Rnd 1: Join yarn to thumb opening at st closest to the upper hand (the center ch), ch 1, sc in each st around, join.(10 sts)

Rnds 2 — 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc2tog around. Break yarn and use tail to cinch top of thumb closed. (5 sts)

Add the Decorative Cuff (optional):

Rnd 1: With Color A, join to opposite edge of cuff near the thumb, ch 5, skip next row, *dc in side of next row, ch 2, skip next row; rep from * around, join to 3rd ch and turn.(11 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, skip the next ch sp, *hdc in the next st, ch 2, skip the next ch sp; rep from * until 1 st rem, hdc in the last st, join with sl st in ch-2 sp with Color B, join and turn.

Rnd 3: With Color B, ch 2, skip the first st, WTr in next unworked row, *ch 1, skip the next st, WTr in next unworked st; rep from * around, join with sl st in ch-2 sp and turn.

Rnd 4: Ch 4, skip the next ch sp, *dc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next ch sp; rep from * around, join with to 3rd ch with Color A and turn. Break Color B.

Rnd 5: With Color A, ch 1, *WTr in the next unworked st, sc in the next st; rep from * around, join and turn. (22 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each rem st around; join and finish off. Weave in ends.
