Blanket – approx. 17.5” x 18.5”

Hat – approx. 12” circumference

Materials:

For blanket & hat: 300 yds. soft worsted wt. yarn in color of choice (MC)

For trim: 50 yds. soft worsted wt. yarn in color of choice (CC)

(Sample shown in Caron “Simply Soft”, light green & cream)

Size H/8 (5 mm) hook – or size to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 15 sts & 7.5 rows = 4” in double crochet on size H hook

Pattern notes:

Blanket is worked back & forth in rows following chart.

Hat is worked in rounds from crown to lower edge.

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), each (ea), hook (hk), increase (inc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), skip (sk), slip stitch (sl st), space (sp), stitch (st)

Blanket

Row 1: With MC, ch 66, dc in 4th ch from hk, dc in ea ch across, turn (64 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in ea dc across, turn (64 dc)

Begin chart 

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc, *ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc (open block completed), dc in next 12 dc (4 solid blocks completed), ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, ** dc in next 3 dc, rep from * once, then rep from * to ** once, ending with dc in last 2 sts, turn.

Continue to follow chart Rows 4-31. At end of Row 31, do not cut yarn.

Begin edging:

Ch 1, sc evenly along left side of blanket (working 2 sc in ea row), 3 sc in corner, sc in ea st along beginning foundation row, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly along right side of blanket (being sure to have same number of sts as along left side), 3 sc in corner, sc in ea dc across top, 3 sc in corner, join with sl st. Fasten off MC.

Add trim:

Join CC in center sc of edging on foundation ch edge of blanket, *ch 3, dc in same sc, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc, rep from * all around blanket, working across 3 sts of ea corner as follows: [ch 3, dc in same sc, sc in next sc] twice. Join with sl st, fasten off and weave in tails.

Hat

Rnd 1: With MC, ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing loop method: wind yarn around forefinger once, insert hook into loop, yo, pull loop through ring), ch 3, work 11 dc over strands of ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (pull yarn tail to close ring) (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, work 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in ea dc around, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (36 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in ea of next 3 dc, ch 2, sk 2, *dc in ea of next 4 dc, ch 2, sk 2, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 6: Ch 6 (counts as first dc and ch-2 sp), sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, *2 dc in sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2, dc in next dc, rep from * around, ending with 2 dc in last sp, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-6, do not turn (6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 7: Ch 3, *2 dc in sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, ending last rep with sl st in top of beg ch-3, do not turn (6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in ea st & sp around, working sc in ea dc & 2 sc in ea sp, join with sl st (36 sc). Fasten off MC.

Rnd 9: Join CC in any sc on Rnd 8, *ch 3, dc in same sc, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st. Fasten off CC and weave in tails.
