  • 1 skein of dark gray yarn
  • Light grey of scrap yarn
  • Black cotton yarn scrap yarn
  • 2 safety eyes or black yarn to stitch eyes on the donkey
  • Stuffing (fibrefill or cotton)

  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Stitch marker

Instructions

Head

  • Round 1: 2 CH, 6 SC in second CH from hook (6)
  • Round 2: INC repeat 6 times (12)
  • Round 3: 1 SC in each stitch (12)
  • Round 4: * 1 INC, 1 SC, * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Round 5: 1 SC in each stitch (18)

Change color to dark gray

  • Round 6: * 1 INC, 2 SC, * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Round 7: * 1 INC, 3 SC, * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Round 8-11: 1 SC in each stitch (30)

Insert safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8. Leave 6 stitches between the eyes

  • Round 11: * DEC 1 SC, 3 SC * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Round 12: 1 SC in each stitch (24)
  • Round 13: * DEC 1 SC, 2 SC * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Round 14: 1 SC in each stitch (18)
  • Round 15: * DEC 1 SCc, 1 SC * repeat 6 times (12)

Stuff with toy filling

  • Round 16: * DEC 1 SC * until all stitches have been fastened off

Ears

Crochet using dark grey yarn

  • Round 1: 2 CH, 6 SC in second CH from hook (6)
  • Round 2: 1 SC in each stitch (6)
  • Round 3: * 1 SC, 1 INC, * repeat 3 times (9)
  • Round 4: * 2 SC, 1 INC, * repeat 3 times (12)

  • Round 6-8: 1 SC in each stitch (15)
  • Round 9: * 4 SC, 1 INC, * repeat 3 times (18)
  • Round 10: * 5 SC, 1 INC, * repeat 3 times (21)

Body

Crochet using dark grey yarn

  • Round 1: Make a magic circle of 6 stitches (6)
  • Round 2: 1 IND repeat 6 times (12)
  • Round 3: * 1 INC, 1 SC * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Round 4: * 1 INC, 2 SC * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Round 5: * 1 INC, 11 SC, * repeat 2 times (26)
  • Round 6-7: 1 SC in each ST (26)
  • Round 8: * DEC 1, 11 SC * twice (24)
  • Round 9: * DEC 1, 2 SC * 6 times (18)
  • Round 10-12: 1 SC in each ST (18)
  • Round 13: * DEC 1, 1 SC * 6 times (12)
  • Round 14: 1 SC in each ST (12)

Stuff the body with fiberfill and fasten off.

Arms (make 2)

Start crocheting using black cotton yarn

  • Round 1: 6 SC in magic ring (6)
  • Round 2: * 1 INC, 1 SC * repeat 3 times (9)
  • Round 3-4: 9 SC (9)

Change color to dark grey

  • Round 5: 3 DEC, 3 SC (6)

Stuff with fiberfill till Round 5.

  • Round 6-10: 6 SC (5 rows)

Fold the top opening flat and 3 SC through both sides. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Legs

Start crocheting using black cotton yarn

  • Round 1: 2 CH, 6 SC in second CH from hook (6)
  • Round 2: 1 INC repeat 6 times (12)
  • Round 3-4: 12 SC (2 rows)

Change color to dark grey

  • Round 5: * 1 DEC, 1 SC * repeat 4 times (8)
  • Round 6-10: 8 SC (8)

Fold the top of the leg flat and make ch, 4 sc through both sides across.

Tail

  • Round 1: 3 SC in magic ring (3)
  • Round 2: 1 INC repeat 3 times (3)
  • Round 2-5: 6 SC

Fasten off leaving a long piece of yarn for sewing.

Cut 8 pieces of 2 inches/5 cm. Fold a piece of yarn and use a hook to pull the folded yarn through the end of the tail. You will see a loop, then take the hook to pull the ends of the yarn through the loop.

Repeat for the remaining 7 pieces of yarn. Take a needle to pull apart the black yarn.

Assemble

Steps to assemble your donkey:

Attach the legs on the side of the body on row 5 of the bottom
Attach the arm at the top of the body
Then attach the head on top of the body
Fold the ears at the bottom and sew them together. Then attach the ears vertically on top of the head 3 rows above the eyes
Attach the tail at the back between the legs on row 3

Hair

Cut 2-inch strings of black yarn 4 strings per row. Attach the yarn the same way as you attach the black hair on the tail. Make 12 rows of 4 strings and then 3 rows of 3 pieces of yarn

Nostrils

Take two pieces of black yarn and make two vertical stitches on row 3 from the light grey nose these represent the nostrils.
