2 oz Caron Simply Soft Yarn (If using a heavier worsted weight yarn such as Red Heart Super Saver, use a size H crochet hook instead of the I hook)

This hat was designed to cover the ears. If you would like one that goes above the ears, subtract two of the X-stitch rows or more if needed.

Ch 4. Join to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, (counts as first dc now and throughout) Work 11 dc in ring. Join with a sl st to top of ch 2. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, work a dc in same space as ch 2. 2 dc in each dc around. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in

ea of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (48 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in ea of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in ea of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (60 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in ea of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in ea of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in top ch of ch 2. (72 dc)

Rnd 7: Ch 3, (counts as first dc and ch 1 now and throughout), dc in same space (V st made), *Skip next 2 chs, work a V st (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st in first V- stitch made.

Rnd 8: Ch 3, Dc in same st. Work a V-stitch in each ch 1 sp around. Join with a sl st in first V- stitch made.

Rnd 9-13: Repeat Row 8.

Rnd 14: Repeat Row 8, ending with a sl st in second ch of ch 3 at the beginning of rnd.

Rnd 15: Ch 2, 1 dc in space left by ch 1. 1 dc in next dc of V-st. *1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next ch 1 space, 1 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 2.

Rnd 16: Ch 2, 1 dc in ea dc around. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2.

Finish off and work in ends with yarn needle.
