Materials:
- US — G hook, 4.0 mm hook
- Small amounts of worsted weight cotton yarn, in blue, white, tan/cream/brown, and red, or colors of your choice
- Buttons: 2 small black buttons (or sew on eyes), 1 red ½ inch button
- Thread: black and red, small amounts
- Needles: thin sewing needle and tapestry/yarn needle
With Blue Yarn, ch 6.
Round 1: Skip the ch closest to the hook, and sc in the BLO of the next 4 ch. In the remaining ch, work 3 sc, rounding around the end. In the opposite side of the starting ch, sc in the remaining loops of the 4 sc. In the last skipped ch, work 3 sc. (14 sc oval made) Join with a sl st and ch 1. Place marker (PM) in first st of round if desired, and move up with each row.
Round 2: Sc in the first 4 sts. Work 2 sc into each of the next 3 sts. Sc in the next 4 sts, and work 2sc into each of the last 3 sts. (20 sc) Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 3: Sc in the first 4 sts. Work [2 sc in the next st, then 1 sc in the next st] 3 times. Sc in the next 4 sts, then [2 sc in the next st, then 1 sc in the next st] 3 times. (26 sc) Join with sl st and ch 1. Tip: Weave in starting end of yarn now, while it's easy to reach!
Round 4 — 11: Sc evenly around each row. Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 12: Sc evenly around row. After the last st, remove hook from loop and insert it into the top of the first st of the round. Pull the working loop to the back and replace on hook. Yarn over with White yarn and pull through loop and st on hook. Ch 1 with white yarn. Break blue yarn, leaving a length to weave in.
Round 13: Sc in the first 12 sts. Next will be series of 5 spike cluster stitches, as follows:
Insert hook into st directly below the last sc made, and pull up loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st two rows directly below the currently worked st (one to the left of last sc made), and pull up another loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st directly below the next st to the left, and pull up a loop to height of new row. Yarn over once more, and pull through all 4 loops on hook. Short Spike Cluster made. Sc in the next st, skipping the one «behind» the cluster.
Insert hook into st directly below the last sc made (same space as last loop of previous cluster), and pull up loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st three rows directly below the currently worked st (one to the left of last sc made), and pull up another loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st directly below the next st to the left, and pull up a loop to height of new row. Yarn over once more, and pull through all 4 loops on hook. Medium Spike Cluster made. Sc in the next st, skipping the one «behind» the cluster.
Insert hook into st directly below the last sc made (same space as last loop of previous cluster), and pull up loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st four rows directly below the currently worked st (one to the left of last sc made), and pull up another loop to height of new row. Insert hook into st directly below the next st to the left, and pull up a loop to height of new row. Yarn over once more, and pull through all 4 loops on hook. Long Spike Cluster made. Sc in the next st, skipping the one «behind» the cluster.
Make a Medium Spike Cluster, as in Step 2.
Make a Short Spike Cluster, as in Step 1.
A simple sketch of these spike cluster sts is shown above. To continue Round 13, sc in the remaining 5 sts. Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 14: Sc in the first 13 sts. Insert hook into st 3 rows below the next st, pull up a loop to height of new row, insert hook into top loops (of same st, top row straight up from loop), yo, and pull through st and loop on hook. Spike Stitch made directly between Spike Clusters. Sc in next st, make another Spike St, sc in next st, make another Spike St, sc in next st, make one last Spike St, and sc in remaining 6 sts. (4 total Spike Sts and 22 sc made) Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 15: Sc evenly around. (26 sc) Join with sl st and ch 1. Pull working loop up a bit so you don't loose it, and remove hook from loop.
Make the Face:
Insert hook into BLO of 15th st of the previous round. Join the Tan/Cream/Brown yarn with a sl st, ch 1, and sc in the BLO of the same st and next 5 sts. (6 sc) Ch 1 and turn.
Sc in 6 sts across. Break yarn and weave in ends.
Round 16: Replace hook in last st of Round 15 and tighten up yarn to working tension. Sc in the first 14 sts. Sl st surface crochet 6 sts across the middle of the Face Rows, creating a mustache line across the face. (See photo below.) Sc in remaining 6 sts. Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 17: Sc in first 14 sts. Sl st loosely across top of 6 Face sts. Sc in remaining 6 sts. After the last st, remove hook from loop and insert it into the top of the first st of the round. Pull the working loop to the back and replace on hook. Yarn over with Red yarn and pull through loop and st on hook. Ch 1.
Round 18: Sc in the first 14 sts. Sc in the BLO of the 6 sl sts above the Face. Sc in the last 6 sts. Join with sl st and ch 1.
Round 19: Sc evenly around. Join with sl st, but do not ch. Note: The remaining rows are worked in spiral rounds, so there is no more joining and chaining for each round. If you haven't used a place marker before now, be sure to PM in the 1st st for each of the remaining rounds so you don't lose your place.
Round 20: Sl st in the first 13 sts. Sc in the remaining 13 sts.
Round 21: Ch 15, skip the 13 sl sts, and sc in the remaining 13 sts.
Round 22: Sc in the first 6 ch, ch 1, skip 2 ch, and sc in remaining 6 ch. (The ch 1 and skip 2 ch creates the button hole.) [Sc in next 2 sts, then sc2tog] 3 times, then sc in remaining st. (22 sc and 1 ch made)
Round 23: Sc evenly around, in ea st and in the ch 1 sp. (23 sc)
Round 24: [Sc in 8 sts, then sc2tog] 2 times. Sc in remaining 3 sts. (21 sc)
Round 25: Sc evenly around.
Round 26: [Sc in 5 sts, then sc2tog] 3 times. (18 sc)
Round 27: Sc evenly around.
Round 28: [Sc in 4 sts, then sc2tog] 3 times. (15 sc)
Round 29: Sc evenly around.
Round 30: [Sc in 5 sts, then sc2tog] 3 times. (12 sc)
Round 31: Sc evenly around.
Round 32: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sc)
Round 33: Sc evenly around. Break yarn and weave through stitches to gather and close into a point. Weave in ends.
Finishing Touches:
Using black thread, sew the small black buttons or eyes to the face.
Embroider on a mouth using remaining black thread.
Use the red thread to sew the red button to the back, opposite the button hole.
