Crochet Christmas Tree Bookmark

Materials: (US) size 7 steel hook, size 10 cotton thread, novelty star button, tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and sewing on button)
NOTE: Example was made with two strands of thread and a size 1 steel hook.
For tassel: Cut 9 strands of thread approximately 7-8 inches long, set aside.
ch 4
Row 1: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, turn.
Row 2: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: skipping first st, sl st in each of next 2 sts, ch 3, 3 dc in same st, 4 dc in next st, turn.
Row 4: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, turn.
Row 5: skipping first st, sl st in each of next 2 sts, ch 3, 3 dc in same st, dc in each of next 6 sts, 4 dc in next st, turn.
Row 6: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 10 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, turn.
Row 7: skipping first st, sl st in each of next 8 sts, sc in next st, ch 50 (or until desired length), do not fasten off.
For tassel: Holding 8 of the previously cut strands together, sl st tightly around center of strand bundle, fasten off leaving 4 inch tail (this will blend into tassel.) Using remaining strand of thread, wrap around the tassel approximately 1/4 inch below top of and tie securely with a double knot (these will blend into the tassel as well), trim tassel evenly at bottom.
Finishing: With scrap of leftover crochet thread, sew button to top most point of tree.
