Supplies:
worsted weight acrylic yarn in cream for the skin, any color for the dress, any color for the hair
a small amount of yarn for hair decoration and belt
4mm hook
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
polyester stuffing
black yarn for eyes or 6mm safety eyes
Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
ch1 = chain one
FLO = front loops only
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off
How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.
Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring.
Head and Body:
Starting at the top of the head with skin color
1) magic circle with 7sc (7)
2) 2sc in each st (14)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (21)
4-8) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
If you are using safety eyes, install them in between the 6th and 7th row with 3 visible stitch holes between them. Before you install them, turn the doll so the last st you put is in the center of the back of the head. That last st will also be the same side you finish off the body. You want the finishing side to be the back of the body.
Instructions for yarn eyes, nose and mouth are in the assembly section and are done after the doll is stuffed and closed up.
9) 1sc in the first st, (now there's 20st left in the row), 2tog around (11)
10) 1sc in next 9st, change colors in 10th st, sl st the last st (11)
11) 2sc in each st for 1 row (22)
12-15) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
16) 1sc in next 9st then 2sc in next 2st, 1sc in next 9st then 2sc in last 2st (26)
17) 1sc in the FLO for 1 row (26)
sl st next front loop. f/o and weave in yarn tail
Stuff the head.
Closing up the body:
Turn the doll upside down and roll back row 16 to expose the loops inside the body. Insert yarn into a loop, ch1 (this is the only time you ch1), 1sc then 2tog until you have used up all the loops. You have finished the first row.
Working in both loops of the stitches, repeat 1sc then 2tog around until you have 9st left, stop and stuff the body before the hole gets too small. f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Weave in and out of the remaining st, stuff the body more if needed, pull yarn tail to close gap then knot off and hide yarn tail inside the body.
Hair Cap: with any color
1) magic circle with 7sc (7)
2) 2sc in each st (14)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (21)
4-7) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st next and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing
Arms: make 2 with dress color
1) magic circle or adjustable loop with 6sc(6)
2-3) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
sl st next st and f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Bring the finishing yarn tail up through the center hole of row 1, straighten out the arm, and knot off. You will use this yarn tail to sew the arm to the body.
Hands: with skin color
1) crocheting through both sides of the open part of the arm, insert skin color into the far right side, ch1 then 1sc in the same space. Working to the left, 2hdc in the next 2 spaces.
f/o leaving a tail to make a thumb.
Thumbs: Wrap the yarn tail over a small section on one side of the hand and pull tight to create a separation in the hand. The small bump on one side of the separation is the thumb. The hands will have a slightly different look from each other but they are small so that's barely noticeable.
Option for arms:
My original doll (the one with white hair) that I introduced in the dragon story last year has plain, skin colored, arms with no hands, I've included the instructions so you can make those instead if you wish to. With skin color, make 2.
1) magic circle or adjustable loop with 6sc (6)
2-4) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
sl st next st and f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Sew the open end of the arm to the body.
Belt: with color of your choice
1) chain a length that fits around the body, f/o and sew it to the body. Or just wrap yarn around the body, no chain.
Assembly: Follow the steps in the order they are given for best results.
1) Yarn eyes and mouth: steps 1-2 are done before the hair cap is sewn in so that all the knots will be hidden under the cap. Bring black yarn through the top of the head and out in between the 6th and 7th row, wrap the yarn around the 6th row 2 or 3 times. Bring the yarn to the other side to make the other eye with 3 visible stitch holes between the eyes. Once done the eyes, bring the yarn in between the 8th and 9th row to make the mouth. Once done, bring the yarn back up through the head and out one stitch over from where you went in. Knot the yarn tails together and cut short.
2) Yarn nose and eyelids: Bring skin color yarn through the top of the head and out in between the 6th and 7th row, wrap the yarn around the 7th row a number of times until you have the size of nose you want. Once done the nose, bring the yarn tail out in between the 5th and 6th row, above each eye, and wrap the yarn, horizontally over the top of the eyes 2 or 3 times. Once done, bring the yarn back up, a stitch over from where you went in, knot the yarn tails together and cut short.
3-4) Sew the belt then the arms on. It's easier to sew the belt first then the arms. Make sure the thumbs are pointed in the right direction!
It is hard to clearly explain how I did the hair.
5) Add yarn hair to the hair cap: Using the same color yarn as the hair cap, wrap yarn into a small bundle loosely around your hand. Cut through one end of the bundle. The bundle, if stretched out, should be about 12 inches long. This gives you hair about 6 inches in length. You will trim these after they are rooted. Starting in between the 1st and 2nd row, root them, one by one, side by side, down the center of the cap. This will give you hair on both sides of the head with a part down the center. Do not worry if the part is uneven, this part will be covered over with a braid.
6) Make 3 braids: Wrap a small bundle around your hand 3 -5 times. The more times you wrap, the thicker the braid will be. Using a separate piece of yarn, tie off the center, then cut through the other end. Stretched out the bundle should be at least 12 inches long, the strands should be at least 6 inches long, once braided the braids will be between 4 and 5 inches long depending how tight you braid. Divide the strands into 3 equal parts and make a braid.
7) Make a few small bundles of hair. Again, wrapping the yarn around your hand a few times then tie off the center like you did for the braids. Do not braid these bundles. The number of bundles you make is up to you. I added just 2, both to the front of the head.
8) Sew on the hair cap: First stretch out the cap so it fits easier on the head. Place it so the bottom of the back of the cap sits on row 10 of the head then sew it to the head. Once done, knot off anywhere and leave the yarn tail hanging as a strand of hair.
9) Sew the bundles of hair and braids to the head. First sew the 2 bundles over the 1st row of the cap on the front of the head. Next sew the braids in. You have to sew both ends of the braids into the head.
Sew the side braids in first then the top braid in the center of the head. These braids will also keep the hair tidy by holding everything in place. Please view part 2 of the video tutorial if unsure about this part.
*The girl with white hair got an extra braid at the bottom. The braids keep the hair in place and tidy. Sew both ends of each braid to the head, add a few holding stitches to each in the back of the head to keep them tight and in place.
