US G hook (4 mm), H hook (5 mm)
Tapestry needle
Sew-on snaps
Tape measure
Abbreviation Used {US Terms}:
hdc=half double crochet
ch=chain
st(s)=stitch(es)
sl st=slip stitch
sc=single crochet
sk=skip
tr=treble crochet
dc=double crochet
Measure First
First, using a tape measure, measure around your dog’s neck in inches.
Next, with off-white, chain the number of stitches needed to measure 1-2” less then neck size. Remember, yarn stretches. Make it an odd number so you will end up with an even number of stitches.
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across.(even number of sts) Fasten off.
Now hold up to dog’s chest and use stitch markers to mark a stitch on each side the width of the chest. Rejoin the yarn where 1st st marker is and continue with row 2.
Row 2: hdc in each st to the 2nd stitch marker, turn
Row 3: Ch 1,hdc first 2 sts together, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc last 2 sts together, turn
You will repeat row 3 until you are down to 1 stitch. Fasten off. Weave in any ends.
Border
Join green in 1st st, Ch 1, sc evenly around working in chs, sts, and ends of rows with 3 sc in the point of bandana. Join with sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Shamrock
You will make 3 small hearts and sew them together to form the shamrock. Note: If making this for a small dog, you may need to use a thinner yarn or thread and smaller hook to make the shamrock small enough to fit on bandana.
For each:
With G hook, ch 4, (make all the next sts in the 4th ch from hook) 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 2, sl st. Fasten off.
Turn 2 hearts to wrong side. Sew together in back loops from heart point to 3-4 sts up side of heart. Add the 3rd heart and sew in same matter.
Join green where the 3 hearts meet. Ch desired amount for length of stem. For example, ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch, sl st where you began.
Sew the shamrock to your desired place on the bandana.
Sew the snap ends to each end of the 1st row. If you don’t have a snap, a 1/2 inch button can be used and buttoned through one of the stitches on the other end.
