Materials
To make a dog you will need:
– A Crochet hook, 2.5mm
– DK yarn in any color you want!
– A tapestry needle and scissors
– Safety eyes and either a safety nose or black yarn to embroider a nose
– Stuffing
– A stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round
– Pipe cleaner if you want your dog’s tail to be curled up
Please note that you can make the dogs using any size crochet hook and yarn weight for a smaller or bigger result. I like using DK as it’s most commonly available. If you make amigurumi, it is usually recommended to go down a bit from the recommended hook size for the yarn to allow for a no-hole look (we don’t want to see the stuffing show through in between stitches)! Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, they should stand about 15cm tall.
Stitches & Abbreviations
The pattern is written using US crochet terms in continuous spirals. You will need to know the following kinds of stitches to make him:
– Magic Ring (MR)
– Chaining (ch)
– Single crochet (sc)
– Crocheting into back loops only (BLO)
– Decrease (dec); preferably using the invisible decrease method
– Increase (inc)
– Changing colors if you want to do multi colored dogs (I will not be giving instructions for this as this is highly dependable on what dog you want to make. Just go wild :))
And now, let’s get started!
Legs (Make 4)
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: (Sc, Inc) around (9)
Round 3: Sc around in BLO (9)
Round 4-5: Sc around (9)
Round 6: (Sc 2, inc) around (12)
Round 7: Sc around (12)
Repeat this 3 more times (the last leg you make is going to be the dog’s right front leg), making 4 legs, BUT DO NOT FASTEN OFF THE FOURTH LEG! We will now join the legs together to make the
Body
Round 8: To join the legs together, work the following: sc 2, ch5, join the 2nd leg (right hind) with 7 sc, ch 2, join the 3rd leg (left hind) with 7 sc, ch 5, join the 4th (left front) leg with 7 sc, ch 2, join to the first leg with 5 sc. You should now have 42 stitches. Don’t worry about the gaping hole, we will fix this later.
Round 9-14 (6 rounds total): Sc around (42), don’t forget to stuff the legs
Round 15: Sc 9, (dec, sc 2) x4, sc to end (38)
Round 16: Sc 8, (dec, sc) x5, sc to end (33)
Round 17: Sc 8, dec x5, sc to end (28)
Round 18: Sc 8, dec x3, sc to end (25), fasten off
To close the hole in the belly, insert your hook into any of the stitches on the belly, then start single crocheting around, working into the backsides of the chains you made when you joined the legs together. It’s important that you make decreases around the part where you chained 2 so the front legs and back legs are close together; I decreased over one stitch of the leg and one of the chains. Continue until you have finished one round, you should roughly have 25 stitches (10 from the chains on the sides, and 3-4 additional stitches per leg), but the exact number does not matter. Work another round, decreasing around evenly, but especially around the chest and butt area. I worked (2 sc, dec) on the sides and 3 decreases around the chest/butt area. This should leave you with around ~15 stitches. You might have more or less, but again, the exact exact number does not matter. Make another round of decreasing evenly across, then fasten off and sew closed. Depending on how many stitches you started with, you might need to add another round of decreasing. You should have 6-8 stitches to sew it closed. I’m sorry I cannot give detailed instructions for this, but it really is easier than it sounds! Just keep at it and it will work out just fine.
Head
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: Inc around (12)
Round 3: (Sc, inc) around (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24)
Round 5: (Sc 3, inc) around (30)
Round 6: (Sc 4, inc) around (36)
Round 7-13 (7 rounds): Sc around (36)
Round 14: Sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 3, inc 2, sc 3, inc, sc 2, inc, sc to end (42), this will form a bit of a snout (if you’re making a dog with a pattern on the head, keep in mind that you can do this segment anywhere on the round (e.g. sc 7 first, then work the section written above, then sc to the end) to make it easier to have the nose/cheeks where you want them to be)
Round 15-16: Sc around (42)
Round 17: (Sc 5, dec) around (36)
Round 18: (Sc 4, dec) around (30)
Round 19: (Sc 3, dec) around (24), start stuffing, placing a bit extra stuffing on the nose and cheek areas we made on round 14, and place the eyes between rounds 12 and 13, approx 7 stitches apart at equal distance to the nose (the 2 incs we made on round 14)
Round 20: (Sc 2, dec) around (18)
Round 21: (Sc, dec) around (12), finish stuffing
Round 22: Dec around (6), fasten off and sew closed
Collar
Row 1: ch 29, sc across (28)
Row 2: Sc across (28), fasten off
Tail
Round 1: 6sc into a MR
Round 2: (sc, inc) around (9)
Round 3-12 (10 rounds): Sc around (9), fasten off. Note that you can make the tail however long, short, thick or thin as is required for your dream doggo!
Floppy ears (Make 2)
Round 1: 6sc into a MR
Round 2: (sc, inc) around (9)
Round 3: (Sc 2, inc) around (12)
Round 4: (Sc 3, inc) around (15)
Round 5-13 (9 rounds): Sc around (15)
Round 12: (Sc 3, dec) around (12)
OR: Standing ears (Make 2)
Round 1: 6sc into a MR
Round 2: Sc around (6)
Round 3: (Sc 1, inc) around (9)
Round 4: Sc around (9)
Round 5: (Sc 2, inc) around (12)
Round 6: (Sc 3, inc) around (15)
Round 7-10 (4 rounds): Sc around (15)
(Of course you can make the ears however big or small as you’d like!)
To assemble your doggo, sew the ears onto the head and embroider a nose and mouth. If you want to give your dog a tongue, I simply chained 3, worked 2 rows of 2 sc, and decreased on the last row. Then, carefully placing the head so that the eyes look ahead, sew the head onto the body. Then sew the collar on around the neck. Finally, sew on the tail.
