Brim

You may want to make the brim wider if you are making this hat in a larger size than 0-3 months. To do this add more chain stitches.

Using MC Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hk and each across. * Ch 1 and turn, sl st in BLO of each across. Rep from * to make a long strip.

Stretch strip out then release and measure. Needs to be about an inch less than the head circumference measurement shown in table.

Number of ribs on one side must be a multiple of 6 minus 1. (0-3 months hat = 41 rows)

To join the band: Ch 1 and turn. Bring other end of strip up in front and sl st across through both both thicknesses to form the band.

Body of hat

Rnd 1: Ch 1 and turn so seam is on inside of band. Sc around edge of band. Sl st to join. (Stitch count needs to be a multiple of 6 including the ch 1. 0-3 months hat = 42)

Rnd 2: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch (change to CC1 on last loop). *Bullion in next (change to MC on final loop). Dc in each of next 5 (change to CC1 on final loop of last dc). Rep from * around finishing with dc in last 3 and sl st to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch (change to CC2 on last loop). *Mini puff in next (change to MC on final loop). Dc in each of next 5 (change to CC2 on final loop of last dc). Rep from * around finishing with dc in last 3 and sl st to join.

Rnd 4: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch and each of next 3 (change to CC1 on last loop of last stitch). *Bullion in next (change to MC on last loop). Dc in each of next 5 (change to CC1 on final loop of last dc). Rep from * around, finish with a bullion and sl st to join.

Rnd 5: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch and each of next 3 (change to CC2 on last loop of last stitch). *Mini puff in next (change to MC on last loop). Dc in each of next 5 (change to CC2 on final loop of last dc). Rep from * around, finish with a mini puff and sl st to join.

Repeat rounds 2 and 3, 4 and 5 until hat measures 1-2 inches less than ‘height of hat’ shown in table, or more if you want a slouchy hat. (0-3 months beanie – repeat rounds 2 and 3 before moving onto next section)

Top section of hat

Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join. (You may want to repeat this round if making a larger hat)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same stitch. *Sc2tog (or invisible decrease), sc in next. Rep from * around. Finish with Sc in last stitch and sl st to join.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same stitch. Sc2tog (or inv dec) around. Sc in last and sl st to join.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join.

Fasten off and cut yarn leaving a long tail. Use yarn needle to weave yarn around posts of stitches. Pull firmly to close hole. Sew remaining hole closed and secure yarn on inside of hat. Secure and weave in all ends.
