Materials Used:

N or 9.0 MM Hook

1 Skein Big Twist Super Chunky yarn or other size 6 Super Bulky yarn in Black, White, and Orange

Tapestry Needle

Stitches Used:

CH – Chain

SC – Single Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

DTC -Double Treble Crochet

SLST – Slip Stitch

Notes:

This pattern is written using American crochet terms.

Approximate finished size is 9” from the top of the hat to the brim; 23” around the brim.

To make smaller or larger try varying the hook size and yarn weight.

Work instructions between * to * number of times listed.

Hat (In Black)

Row 1: Create a magic circle, CH 2, DC 10 in the circle, SLST to the first DC to join and pull tight to close. You may also use a CH 3 and DC 10 into the first chain then pull tight. (10)

Row 2: CH 2, 2 DC in each stitch around, SLST to the first DC to join (20)

Row 3: CH 2, *DC 1, 2 DC in next stitch* 10 times, SLST to first DC to join (30)

Row 4: CH 2, *DC 2, 2 DC in next stitch* 10 times, SLST to first DC to join (40)

Rows 5-10: CH 2, DC 40, SLST to first DC to join (40)

You will now start working on the fins.

Rows 11-15: CH 2, DC 7, turn (7)

Row 16: CH 2, DC next two stitches together, DC 3, DC next two stitches together, turn (5)

Row 17: CH 2, DC 5, turn (5)

Row 18: CH 2, DC next two stitches together, DC 1, DC next two stitches together, turn (3)

Row 19: CH 2, DC 3, finish off and weave in ends. (3)

Count 14 stitches on the brim of the hat from the edge of the first fin. You will attach your yarn for the second fin in the next stitch.

Rows 20-28: Repeat Rows 11-19

Attach your yarn on the brim at the seam (right before the first fin). SC down the sides of the fins and around the brim evenly. At the tips of the fins you will place 2 SC in the first and last DC in the end row. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Face (In White)

Row 1: CH 17, DC in third CH from hook, DC 15, turn (15)

Row 2-4: CH 2, DC 15, turn (15)

Row 5: 10 DTC in the fourth CH from the hook, skip three stitches, SLST in the next stitch, skip three stitches, 10 DTC in the next stitch, SLST in last stitch in row and finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Beak (In Orange)

Row 1: Create a magic circle, CH 1, SC 6 in the circle and pull tight to close. Do not join. You may also use a CH 2 and SC 6 into the second chain from hook then pull tight. (6)

Row 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (12)

Row 3: SC 12, SLST in the next stitch and finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. (12)

Eyes (In Black)

Row 1: Create a magic circle, CH 1, SC 6 in the circle, SLST to the first SC, and pull tight to close. You may also use a CH 2 and SC 6 into the second chain from hook then pull tight. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

Attach the beak, holding it in a triangular shape, to the face where the two semi-circles meet.

Attach the eyes with the center above the stitches with the DTC in them.

Attach the face at the front of the hat right above the bottom of the brim. With the remaining tail make shine marks in the eyes then weave in the ends.
