Materials I used

  • Acrylic yarn weight #3 ( I used double strands in two colors: bright blue and cream) or any weight #5 yarn
  • Hook: US Size (6 mm)
  • Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Gauge

10 st X 12 rows ( 4” X 4”)


Sizes

This sample is 6” X 26” in circumference


Stitch Key

  • Ch = Chain
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • St = Stitch
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • Tr = Treble Crochet

Specialty Stitch & Technique Key

FpDc = Front Post Double Crochet [Yo, insert hook under the post of next st, yo, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yo, draw through last 2 loops on hook]

Notes

  • This pattern is worked in rows.
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as st
  • Ch 2 at the beginning of the row does count as a stitch
  • I used two strands for this pattern for a more sturdy fabric
  • I changed colors for more interest (optional)
  • This pattern uses the Bar stitch, which calls for multiples of 3+3


Instructions

Chain 30

Row 1: Sc 1 in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 in next ch and across to end of the row, turn (29)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next st and across to end of the row, turn (29)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from the hook, sc 1 in next st, Fpdc in next stitch two rows down (around the sc on the 1st row), *sc 1 in next 2 st, Fpdc in next ( again in the st two rows below, repeat from * to end of the row, finish with sc 1 in last 2 st, turn(29)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next st and across to end of the row, turn (29)

Here I changed the color to cream

Row 5: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from the hook, sc 1 in next st, Fpdc around the Fpdc from prev row, *sc 1 in next 2 st, Fpdc around the Fpdc from prev row, repeat from * to end of the row, finish with sc 1 in last 2 st, turn ( 29)

Rows 6: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st from hook, sc 1 in next st and across to end of the row, turn (29)

Change back to the color blue

Rows 7-27: Repeat rows 4+5 ( without changing colors)

You can continue repeating rows 4+5 for a higher cowl


Finishing

Using the tapestry needle, join two sides to form a cowl

Secure the yarn, cut, and weave in the ends.
