Susan Bates Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]

¾” (19 mm) or 1” (25 mm) button
Gauge/Tension: GAUGE: 15 sc = 4” (10 cm); 15 rows = 4” (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Case measures 7” wide x 4” long (18 x 10 cm).
Notes
1. Case is worked in joined rounds with right side facing at all times.
2. When instructed to work in a stitch “2 rows below”, work in the row numbered 2 less than the current row. For example, if you are working Row 5, a stitch “2 rows below” is in Row 5 – 2 = Row 3.
3. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Cut old color.
Special Stitch
Spike st (spike stitch) = Sc in indicated stitch 2 rows below.
CASE
With A, ch 27.
Round 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch; working in opposite side of foundation ch, skip first ch, sc in next 25 ch; join with slip st in first sc—52 sc.
Rounds 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with slip st in first sc.
Round 4: Repeat Round 2; change to B.
Round 5: Ch 1, spike st in first st, sc in next st, *spike st in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc.
Round 6: Repeat Round 2; change to C.
Round 7: Repeat Round 5.
Round 8: Repeat Round 2; change to D.
Round 9: Repeat Round 5.
Round 10: Repeat Round 2; change to A.
Round 11: Repeat Round 5.
Rounds 12–14: Repeat Round 2.
Flatten case and place st marker in center st on back edge for buttonhole.
Round 15: Ch 1, sc in each st around to marked st, ch 15 (buttonhole made), sc in marked st, sc in each remaining st around; join with slip st in first sc—52 sc and 1 buttonhole.
Round 16: Slip st in each sc and ch around; join with slip st in first slip st. Fasten off.
FINISHING
With A, sew button to center front of case below top edge.
Weave in ends.
