Size: Stretches to fit Pre-teen/Teen/Adult (approx. 3.5” w. x 17” l. unstretched)

Materials:

  • 50 yds. cotton/elastic blend yarn (sample shown in Cascade Yarns “Fixation”, 98% cotton, 2% elastic)
  • Size G hook, or size to achieve gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge: 18 dc & 10.5 rows = 4” in double crochet on size G hook

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), each (ea), hook (hk), repeat (rep), skip (sk), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), together (tog)

Special stitches:

Cross-stitch (X-st): skip next dc, dc in next dc, dc in skipped st (taking hook to right in front of st just completed)

Dc2tog: double crochet 2 stitches together

Pattern notes: Headband is worked in rows from end to end, then joined into circle with a slip stitch seam.

Headband

Row 1 (RS): Ch 12, dc in 4th ch from hk, dc in ea ch across, turn (10 dc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3, dc in ea dc across, turn (10 dc)

Rows 3-7: Rep Row 2.

Row 8 (inc row): Ch 3, dc in same dc at base of beg ch, dc in ea dc across to last st, 2 dc in last st, turn (12 dc)

Row 9 (inc row): Rep Row 8 (14 dc)

Row 10 (inc row): Rep Row 8 (16 dc)

Row 11 (inc row): Rep Row 8 (18 dc)

Begin cross-stitch section:

Row 12: Ch 3, sk next dc, dc in next dc, dc in skipped st (X-st completed), X-st across to last st, dc in last st, turn (8 X-sts, plus 1 dc at ea end of row)

Row 13: Ch 3, X-st in top of ea X-st across, dc in last st, turn.

Rows 14-32: Rep Row 13.

Begin decreases:

Row 33: Ch 3, dc next 2 dc tog, dc in ea dc across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st, turn (16 dc

Row 34: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in ea dc across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st, turn (14 dc)

Row 35: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in ea dc across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st, turn (12 dc)

Row 36: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in ea dc across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st, turn (10 dc)

Row 37: Ch 3, dc in ea dc across, turn (10 dc)

Rows 38-43: Rep Row 37. At end of Row 43, do not cut yarn.

Finishing: Fold piece in half with right sides together, holding foundation chain together with last row worked. Ch 1, sl st in ea st across through both thicknesses. Fasten off and weave in tails.
