Materials:

  • 8 mm crochet hook
  • T-shirt yarn
  • stitch markers
  • tassel (optional)

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • BLO: back loops only
  • R: round / row

Pattern:

Note: join your rounds, with a sl st in the 1st stitch of your round, at the end of each one of them. Also make sure to mark your 1st stitch of the round everytime.

To begin, we will leave off a long tail of yarn before making our slipknot. This piece of yarn will be used to fill in the eventual holes we will have in the middle of the chain base.

Make your slipknot, then ch 19.

Round 1: Starting from the 2nd loop of the hook: 17 sc, 3 sc in the last stitch; we will then continue working on the other side of the chain base: 16 sc, 2 sc in the last stitch.

Sl st in the 1st stitch of the round. (38)

Round 2: (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 1 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 1 sc. (46)

Round 3: 1 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 3 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 2 sc. (54)

R4: 2 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 20 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 20 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 3 sc. (62)

R5: 3 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 22 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 7 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 22 sc, (3 sc in next stitch), 4 sc. (70)

R6: 70 BLO sc (70).

R7 to 12: 70 sc (70).

On your last round, make sure to keep your stitch marker in your 1st sc of the round, don’t remove it, we will need it.

Cut yarn, make an invisible join and weave in ends.

With the long tail we left at the beginning; sl st along the middle of the chain base to hide the holes.

We will now work in rows:

Starting from the marker (count the marked stitch too), count 27 stitches on the left, mark the 27th stitch (that we will not work).

Starting from the marker (count the marked stitch too), count 30 stitches on the right, mark the 30th stitch (that we will not work).

The left side will be slightly longer than the right one, so you can lean the magazines on it. Join the yarn on the right side, in the stitch before the marked one.

Row 13: so join yarn with a sc, then add 53 sc more (54).

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Row 14: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc this time in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 52 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (52)

Row 15: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 50 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (50)

R16: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 48 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (48)

R17: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 46 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (46)

R18: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 44 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (44)

R19: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 42 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (42)

R20: go back to the right side, join yarn without a sc in the 1st stitch of the previous row. Then starting the next stitch: 40 sc, then sl st in the last stitch of the previous row. (40)

Finishing the magazine rack

Round 21: ch 1, then reverse sl st all around the top of the magazine rack, making it a full round. Finish your round with an invisible join, then cut yarn and weave in ends.

Finally you’re done with your new file holder or magazine rack. You can sew or attach the tassel on the back of it for the extra touch. It’s a lot of repeated rows and rounds but a quite simple pattern once you get the gist of it.
