Crochet Basic Cap and Mittens

Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
«DAWN» WOOL and NYLON BULKY YARN or
«DAWN» BULKY YARN
2 ounces each Crimson and White for BASIC CAP AND MITTENS
Plastic Crochet Hook Size J OR ANY SIZE HOOK WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW
GAUGE: 3 sc = 1 inch, 3 rows = 1 inch
BASIC CAP
CENTER SECTION: With Crimson chain (ch) 2, 2 single crochet (sc) in 1st stitch (st) of ch, ch 1, to turn all rows. 2nd ROW: 2 sc in each of the 2 sc. 3rd and 4th ROWS: Work even in sc. 5th ROW: Working in sc increase 1 st at the beginning and end of row. Repeat the last 3 rows 4 times. Work 11 rows even in sc, do not turn at end of last row.
SIDE SECTION: Working along side of center section work 1 sc in each row (27 sc), ch 1 to turn all rows. 2nd ROW: 1 sc in each of the 1st 3 sc, * decrease (dec) in next 2 sts (to dec: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, repeat from * across row. 3rd ROW: 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts, dec in next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, dec in next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts (19 sts). NEXT ROW: Work even. 5th ROW: Sc in 1st sc, * dec in next 2 sts, sc in next sc, repeat from * across row. 6th ROW: Work even. 7th ROW: Dec 1 st at center. 8th ROW: Work even. 9th ROW: Dec in every 2 sts (6 sts). Repeat last 2 rows once. 13th ROW: * Insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * twice, yarn over and work off all loops at one time, cut yarn. Work another side section in same manner attaching yarn in side of 1st row of center section. Do not cut yarn at end of last row. With right side of work toward you crochet a row of sc around entire Cap working 11 sc in each edge of side sections, 13 sc across center front and 1 sc at center back, join, cut yarn.
TIE: (Make 2) With Crimson ch 40 to measure about 12 inches, slip stitch (sl st) in 2nd st from hook, sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut yarn. Sew to each side of Cap.
TRIM: Cut White into 12-20 inch lengths. Tie one end, divide into 3 equal parts and braid having braid about 1 inch wide. When braid is long enough to fit across front of Cap, tie. Trim both ends. Sew to cap as illustrated.
POMPON: (Make 2) Wind White 25 times over a 3 inch cardboard. Remove from cardboard, tie in center and trim. Attach to each side of Cap as illustrated.
BASIC MITTENS
With White ch 19 (6 inches long), join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 1 sc in each st of ch, join all rounds and ch 1 to turn all rounds. NEXT 6 ROUNDS: 1 sc in each sc. 8th ROUND: Working in sc decrease 2 sts evenly spaced in both front and back (15 sc). 9th ROUND: Work even in sc. Repeat the last 2 rounds once, cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Draw sts together and sew firmly. BEADING: With right side of work toward you and working on opposite side of starting ch attach White at joining, ch 1, sc in same space, * ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st, repeat from * all around, ch 1, join in 1st sc, ch 1, turn. NEXT ROUND: Work 1 sc in each sc and in each ch 1 space. NEXT ROUND: 1 sc in each sc, join, cut yarn.
TIE: With Crimson, working tightly, crochet a chain about 14 inches long, cut yarn. Lace through beading.
POMPON: (Make 2) Wind Crimson 20 times over a 2 inch cardboard. Tie in center, cut both ends and trim. Sew to each end of ties. Work other mitten in same manner.
