BERNAT SCANDIA (2 oz. skeins) — 2 Main Color (M C) — 1 Contrasting Color (C C)
1 BERNAT-Aero crochet hook Size J (Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 8)
OR ANY SIZE HOOK THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GIVEN BELOW

GAUGE: 5 s c = 2 inches

BRIM: Using C C, ch 22 sts loosely to measure 8½ inches. Row 1: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook and in each st to end of ch, ch 1, turn. Row 2: Working in FRONT LOOP ONLY, 1 s c in each s c, drop C C, using M C, draw through loop on hook (right side), turn — 21 sc. Row 3: 1 s c in first st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 s c in next st (top edge of brim), repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn. Row 4: 1 s c in first st, * ch 1, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * across row, drop M C, pull C C through loop on hook, ch 1, turn. Row 5: Working in BACK LOOP ONLY, 1 s c in first st, * 1 s c in ch 1, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn — 21 sc. Repeat Rows 2 through 5 until there are 10 M C stripes. Fasten off. Seam piece so that first C C stripe and last M C stripe are joined on wrong side. CROWN: Round 1: With right side of brim facing you, working along top edge of brim, using M C, work 1 s c in the end of each row — 40 s c. Do not join. Mark beg of round and carry marker up. Rounds 2 and 3: 1 s c in each s c. Round 4: * 1 s c in each of 8 s c, draw up a loop in each of next 2 s c, y o and draw through 3 loops on hook (dec), repeat from * around — 4 sts decreased. Round 5: * Draw up a loop in each of 2 s c, y o and draw through 3 loops on hook, 1 s c in each of next 7 s c, repeat from * around — 4 sts decreased. Continue to dec 4 sts in EVERY ROUND, being sure that decreases do not come directly over each other until 4 sts remain. Break off leaving an 8 inch end. Pull end through remaining 4 sts and draw up tightly. Fasten off. Steam lightly.
