Crochet Droolie Bib

Materials:

75 yds. worsted wt. cotton yarn (sample shown in Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc. “Peaches & Crème”, Art. 930, 4-ply worsted wt., 100% cotton, 122 yds/2.5 oz. ball)

Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 13 hdc & 8 rows = 4” in half double crochet on size H/8 (5 mm) hook

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), decrease (dec), each (ea), half double crochet (hdc), increase (inc), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), slip (sl), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st)

Pattern notes:

Bib is worked in one piece in joined rounds progressing from center to outer edge.

Do not turn at end of each round but continue in same direction.

Beginning ch-2 counts as hdc.

Special techniques:

Disappearing loop beginning method: wrap yarn once or twice around finger, insert hook into center of this wrapped ring, yarn over and draw loop through ring, chain and work first round of stitches over strands of ring. Pull gently to close center of ring.

Bib

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing loop beginning method), ch 2, work 9 hdc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not turn – 10 hdc

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same hdc at base of beg ch-2, work 2 hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not turn – 20 hdc

Rnd 3 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same hdc at base of beg ch-2, hdc in next hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not turn – 30 hdc

Rnd 4 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same hdc at base of beg ch-2, hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not turn – 40 hdc

Rnd 5 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same hdc at base of beg ch-2, hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not turn – 50 hdc.

Rnd 6 (shaping rnd): Ch 2, hdc in ea of next 35 hdc; ch 40 (for first tie), sl st in 2nd ch from hk & in ea ch across until reaching bib body; sc in next 2 unused hdcs on bib, sl st in next 10 hdc, sc in next 2 unused hdc; ch 40 (for second tie), sl st in 2nd ch from hk & in ea ch across until reaching bib body, join to bib with sl st at base of beg ch-2, sl st in top of beg ch-2. Do not turn, do not fasten off.

Edging:

Ruffled trim: *Ch 3, sl st in next hdc, rep from * around outer edge of bib (i.e., from second tie to first tie, leaving top part of bib untrimmed.) Fasten off and weave in tails.

Plain trim: Ch 1, sc in ea hdc around outer edge of bib (i.e., from second tie to first tie, leaving top part of bib untrimmed), sl st in last st before tie. Fasten off and weave in tails.
