Hook

  • 4.5mm (7) for the coaster
  • 3.5mm (E/4) for the eyes

Gauge

  • The gauge for this pattern is the 1st two rounds of the pattern should measure about 2.5 inches 6.35cm) in diameter, using two strands of yarn and 4.5mm hook.

Finished Size

  • These owl coasters measure about 4 inches (10cm) wide — this does not include the wings and is about 4.5 inches (11.5cm) long.

Instructions

Body (use two stands of yarn for body)

  • Rnd 1, col A, use double strand of yarn and 4.5mm hk — MR, ch3 (counts as dc), 11 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-3 to join, pull yarn tail tight to close the circle. [12dc]

  • Rnd 2, work sts into sps between the sts — Sl st into next sp between sts, ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc, ch1 in same space as ch-3 ( count the ch-3, 1dc, ch1 as a 2dcCL), (2dcCl, ch1) in each of the next 4-sps, change to yarn col B and make a 3dcCl and ch1 (for the beak), change back to col A, make (2dcCl, ch1) in each of the next 6-sps, sl st into top of ch-3 to join, ch1, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends. [11 sets of 2dcCL sts and 1 x 3dcCl]
  • Rnd 3, col C — Slip stitch yarn into the 3rd ch-1 sp to the right of the beak. Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in the same sp as ch-3, make 3dc in each of the next 11 ch-1 sps, sl st into to top of ch-3 to join. [36dc]

Foot (make 2)

  • Rnd 1, color B, the feet are worked in the 6th st counted from under each wing — Sl st yarn into the 6th st, ch3, make 2dc into same space, ch3, sl st into same sp, ch1, cut yarn, fasten off, weave in ends. Repeat for the other foot. [2 x ch-3, 2dc in each rnd]

Eyes (make 2)

  • Rnd 1, col D, use a single strand of yarn, 3.5mm hk — MR, ch3 (counts as dc), make 11 dc, sl st into top of ch-3 to join, pull yarn tail tight to close ring, cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing, fasten off and weave in starting yarn tail. [12dc

  • Rnd 2, col E, eye detail - Insert hk between any st along the inside edge and make 6 sl sts around the circle, cut yarn, fasten off, and knot the two yarn tails at the back of the eye, trim of excess yarn. [6 sl sts]

Finish

  • Sew the eyes to the head using the long yarn tail yarn. Position the eyes on either side of the beak and in round three of the body.
