Materials

  • Super bulky yarn in your choice of colour (I used Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky in Teddy Bear and Fog)
  • 4.5mm crochet hook
  • 6mm safety eyes
  • 8mm safety eyes
  • 4 ply yarn in black or black embroidery floss
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase
  • invdec – invisible decrease
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Finished Size

The finished spider measures approximately 4″ (10cm) wide including the legs. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
  • The pattern is worked from the bottom up.

Pattern Instructions

Spider

R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook (8)

R2: [Inc] x8 (16)

R3: [Sc, inc] x8 (24)

In this next round we’ll be creating the legs.

R4: 5 sc, [ch 5, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in next st] x4, 8 sc, [ch 5, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in next st] x4, 3 sc (24 + 8 legs)

Fold the legs down in front and ignore them in the next round. Crochet into the sc sts between each leg.

R5-8: [Sc] x24 (24) 4 rounds

Insert safety eyes between R5 and R6. Place the 6mm eyes next to the first leg on each side and the 8mm eyes one st over with approximately 2-3 sts between them.

R9: [Sc, invdec] x8 (16)

Start stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.

R10: [Invdec] x8 (8)

Cut the yarn leaving a tail and pull through last st. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the final round and pull to close. Hide the end inside the spider.

Using 4 ply black yarn or black embroidery floss, sew a mouth between the eyes over R5. I like to make it a slight curve.
