- Sizes D/3/3.25mm and I/9/5.5mm crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle
- 18mm heart-shaped red button
- Snap fastener
GAUGE
With 2 strands cotton held tog and size D hook: 10 sc = 1 1/2 inches; 10 sc rows = 1 1/2 inches
Take time to check gauge.
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Work with 2 strands of cotton held together unless otherwise stated.
Use size I crochet hook only to work loop stitch.
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Next foundation single crochet (next foundation sc): [Insert hook in last ch-1 made (see illustration A), yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through 1 lp on hook (see illustration B—ch-1 completed), yo, pull through all lps on hook (see illustrations Cand D—sc completed)] as indicated in instructions.

Row 2: Ch 1, reverse sc (see Stitch Guide) in each of next 27 sc. Fasten off.
Wing
Make 2.
Row 1: With 2 strands of red held tog and size D hook, beg at top of Wing, ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (2 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, turn. (4 sc)
Rows 3 & 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across, ending with 2 sc in last sc, turn. (8 sc)
Rows 5-20: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Eye
Make 2.
Rnd 1: Beg at center of Eye, with navy and size D hook, make slip ring (see illustration), ch 1,10 sc in ring, change color to white, join in first sc. (10 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc in same st as beg ch-3,2 dc in each sc around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, reverse sc in each dc around, join in first sc. Fasten off.
Pupil
Cut a 6-inch strand of yellow, fold in half and knot at center. Draw cut ends through center of Eye, knot at back of Eye to secure. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Using photo as a guide, sew Eyes between rows 68-79 with 1/4-inch sp between Eyes. Sew heart-shaped button to row 68, centered below Eyes for beak. Sew snap fastener centered between Eyes.
Fold Body at center as indicated in diagram and sew side seams closed.
Position Wing at side of Body centered over side seam, sew in place. Rep for 2nd Wing on opposite edge. Fold down flap.
